It looks like that when Microsoft got backed into a corner by Apple and Google they decided they were’t going down without a *REAL*, *SERIOUS* fight... This is some awfully compelling shit from ol’ Micro$oft, not just regurgitated “Windows Forever!” BS.

There honestly wasn’t a major reason for them to change the surface products. They are already class leading devices. And sorry to tell you but Windows Mobile is all but dead at this point.

:( re: Windows Mobile.

re: surface redux: Why stop at “class leading” when you can stomp all over the class and spit in it’s face?

Hardware refresh is coming later in 2017. Even the new SKU for the Surface Book is still using a Skylake CPU, not the new Kaby Lake. Apparently MS was burned real hard by Sky Lake’s general instability and got a lot of negative press for it because of how quickly they adopted it for their Surface Products. So this time around they’re giving Kaby Lake a few months on the market to make sure it’s not going to blow up their faces again.

In regards to Windows Mobile; I was with them since WP7 first launched and picked up an HTC Arrive. Then I got a Samsung WP7, moved to a Lumia 920 and then to a Lumia 1520. Loved the hardware, loved the OS and the UI. However even I made the jump to iOS about 6 months ago. It’s nice having all the apps I wanted but had to do without. If Windows Mobile ever miraculaously returns from the dead, I’ll have no problem making the jump back over.

Sadly, I don’t think it’s ever going to happen.

It’s dead. Even if new devices are shipping, it’s clearly no longer the focus.

My Windows Mobile experience so far: HTC Trophy (WP7), HTC 8X, Lumia 928, Lumia Icon “929", Lumia 930, Lumia 950XL

with the exception of the 8X’s hardware and some initial stability Issues on the 950XL that have fixed with updates, I have been extremely happy with WindowsPhone/WindowsMobile.

I’m still waiting on a Surface phone that’s as great as my Surface Book. Which would probably be the greatest phone ever. Unfortunately from what I hear that’s still going to be a little ways out. But I don’t want to wait. The HP is perfect but I don’t want to spend 700 dollars either. I tried the LG V20 but can’t get myself to make the switch. I just don’t care for Android. Don’t even get me started on iOS.

I guess I’ll be holding onto my 1520 for quite some time...

I don’t think Windows Mobile is dead, it’s still being constantly updated and worked on. MS’s vision relies on it. They just haven’t made a big push for it.

I got the 950XL, which has been a fine device, but I do like the looks of the Elite X3... except for my continuing hatred of HP for their murder of WebOS, that is.

Just because MS isn’t making the hardware anymore, doesn’t mean the platform is dead.... I hope.

That’s a big jump from having years of WP, how did you get used to iOS? I’ve tried every OS except for BB QNX (including Palm’s WebOS which a lot of ideas have been derived from) and iOS seems to work the best. I remember back in the day having a PocketPC running WM5 then going to a Treo then back to PPC then moving to Android. Back then the ecosystems didn’t really exist to keep you in them.

WebOS gave life to so many features we now use on a regular basis today.

The homescreen is literally retarded. I say that not as an insult to those that have mental development issues, but as a classification of its own for the homescreen. The idea of every “shortcut” not actually being a shortcut but representative of the app itself so if you remove it, it removes the app is just plain fucking stupid.

It’s not that it’s hard to get used to, I just think it’s dumb as fuck. There’s no “app drawer” or anything equivalent to it. Folders become a way to dump unsued or rarely used apps somewhere you don’t have to see them where on Windows Mobile (or Android, or literally any other Smartphone OS in the last decade) the homescreen is treated like a desktop or shortcuts and such with the Live Tiles.

I do actually appreciate some of the per-app settings you can manipulate, like an app only having access to the GPS while it’s actively being used, or restricting it from having any access at all. Those kinds of in-depth settings which didn’t even so much exist on WM is pretty nice and I appreciate that. For the most part it didn’t take me terribly long to get used to, but part of that is also the fact like half the apps I use are MS. I have all of the Office Applications, I use Outlook for my e-mail, calendar and contacts syncing, I use Cortana and I even use Groove Music. So that helped the transition.

Overall I’m pretty happy with iOS and my 6S Plus. However, like I said in the beginning, the actual user interface is pants-on-head retarded. The only even remotely saving grace is that they added the ability to “remove” some of the built-in apps like Stocks and such with iOS 10.

I was looking at the 950XL but I’m not sure I want it. The price is almost close to the HP even used and it feels like I should just get the HP at that point. But again, a lot of money for a phone! My 1520 is old and dying though.

Maybe MS is trying to build Window’s 10 mobile into something more before putting out another hardware push with maybe a Surface phone. Which would make a lot of sense. HP’s commitment to Windows Phone is proof the platform isn’t dead. Not to mention the new Creation update will brings lots of new stuff to WM.

I just want to see MS pour as much into a phone as they did the Surface All in One. Because that’s a beast of a device.

Thanks for the in depth response. I sometimes find iOS to be clunky but over the years it has become much more streamlined. I think WP was onto something with the live tiles, iOS tried to address that by adding widgets to the Today tab but it’s not the same and I often forget it’s even there.

The widgets are actually a lot more useful with iOS 10 as well. I never used them in 9, but in 10 there’s two ways to get to them:

As part of the notification pane that you slide down from the top, and swipe over to the left page and you can see them all there, with actionable abilities.

You can also get to them by being on the 1st homescreen panel, swiping to the left of that, and arriving at the widget screen that way. That “suggestions screen” (or whatever the fuck it was called, I honestly don’t know as I never used it) is now gone and replaced with the widget panel.

So, there’s two ways to get to it now, and it’s also actually useful. I use it for weather and Outlook calendar notifications all the time.

I dearly miss using my 830. I had hardware issues; my fault for not having a case on it, so I had to get a phone the worked.

I tried Android. Just no.

I can only use iOS or Android for work and needed a phone that had one, so I have an iPhone 6SE.

I hate it. It’s dull. I hate iOS. It’s so stale a design. I miss my Live Tiles. I liked having transparent tiles forming the picture I chose for my home screen. I miss the easy access to all my apps by alphabetical list. I miss Cortana. Siri works well, but Cortana was sassy and had some superior contextual notifications and support.

I very much wish for my 830 to have worked as well as an iOS or Android device so that I could ditch Apple. The _only_ thing my iPhone has over my 830 is that Groove Music sucks and I could get my Surface Pro 3 to let me transfer files to my 830 so wouldn’t have to stream my music. I want my files with me. I own them. I want to carry them around and not be dependent on some mystical ‘cloud’ connectivity to allow me to play MY music.
